UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA Scarborough Spa Express |
|
Union of South Africa is one of 35 class A4 locomotives, built by the LNER at Doncaster, under the supervision of Nigel Gresley. Number 4488 went into traffic on 29th June 1937, and after nationalisation, became 60009 sporting the British Railways dark green livery. In line with other ex-LNER pacific's, she was fitted with a Kylchap chimney to improve steaming power. She continued to be used on top-link expresses until her withdrawal in January 1966. The locomotive was sold to Mr J B Cameron in July 1966 and has been preserved as she was when withdrawn.
